Gerontagogik ist die Wissenschaft von der Weiterbildung im Prozeß des Alterns und befaßt sich mit Zielen und Inhalten, Methoden und Organisationsformen der Seniorenbildung (für Menschen ab Mitte der Vierziger). Aktualität gewinnt Gerontagogik dadurch, daß der Anteil älterer Menschen an der Population der Industriestaaten sukzessiv zunimmt, und Weiterbildung ältere Menschen befähigen kann, der größeren Lebenserwartung einen Sinn zu geben, z. B. durch Qualifizierung für nachberufliche Tätigkeiten sowie durch Vorbereitung auf das Ausscheiden aus dem Berufsleben.

Gerontagogics is the educational science referring to the problems of growing older (age group of 45 and older). For the anthropology of adults it is important that the mental activities of older people have favored the type of the "young seniors" who start a "third life" by learning and try to train new aptitudes for their leisure-time as well as for professional work. Gerontagogics has to develop contents and methods adequate to the mentality of older people. In consequence of the increasing percentage of older citizens in the population special institutions for senior (further) education have been established. Gerontagogics has to qualify experts for senior (further) education.
